چکیده

This paper is an overview of the Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) Cognitive Extension Architecture which is a methodology or 'pattern' for producing a self-motivating computational system that can be self-aware. ICOM is as a system for abstracting standard cognitive architecture from the part of the system that can be selfaware and a system for assigning value on any given idea or 'thought' and action as well as producing on going selfmotivations in the system. In ICOM, thoughts are created through emergent complexity in the system. As a Cognitive Architecture, ICOM is a high level or 'top down' approach to cognitive architecture focused on the system's ability to produce high level thought and self-reflection on ideas as well as form new ones. Compared to standard Cognitive Architecture, ICOM is a form of an overall control system architecture on top of such a traditional architecture.

Evolving Complete Cognitive Architectures: The Role of Neural Competition and Diffusive Emotional Control for Learning and Emergent Cognitive Capabilities

Daily research in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and computational neuroscience involves the solution and simulation of concrete and specific cognitive tasks, like locomotive control, visual object recognition and so on. Considering the long-term perspective of an autonomous and selfmotivated artificial cognitive entity, possibly with humanlevel cognitive capabilities, the quite fundame...

Using pedagogical agents to support collaborative distance learning

In this paper, we describe an animated pedagogical agent that assists the interaction among students in a virtual class within a collaborative communication tool, either on-line or not, motivating them, correcting wrong ideas and providing new information. This guiding agent, which we call Collaboration Agent, will consider not only the cognitive capabilities of students, but also social and af...

A Novel Computing Architecture for Cognitive Systems based on the Laminar Microcircuitry of the Neocortex – the COLAMN project

Understanding the neocortical neural architecture and circuitry in the brain that subserves our perceptual and cognitive abilities will be an important component of a “Grand Challenge” which aims at an understanding of the architecture of mind and brain. We have recently embarked on a new five-year collaborative research programme, the primary aim of which is to build a computational model of m...

Cognitive Constructor: An Intelligent Tutoring System Based on a Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architecture (BICA)

Significant progress can be made in the part of elementary school education that relies on intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), if the role of a referee and a peer advisor will be performed by a pedagogical agent that is a computer implementation of a cognitive architecture modeling the process of learning. Recent studies in cognitive architectures funded by the DARPA IPTO BICA Program have iden...
